It is very hard to upstage Lionel Messi, especially when the Argentinian is receiving yet again another personal world due to his outstanding performances on the pitch for FC Barcelona.
Recently this week, Messi received his sixth Golden Boot by being last season’s most prolific goalscorer in all of the major European leagues. We saw all the usual applauses and Messi’s more than normal humbleness when being in the spotlight, but his son Mateo managed to steal the show from the Argentinian forward.
When Messi was sitting on his seat waiting for his call to get on stage and receive his award, Mateo was impatient on his, moving his head forward and looking to get on stage with his father. The sheer excitement and happiness that came to his face when his father got on stage, taking the whole family with him.
Once that happened, the little boy made all kinds of gestures with his tongue and faces while looking at the camera, much to the amusement of the people watching there and those who were watching from all over the world. He even had the opportunity of taking the microphone himself and said a few words to the public.
“We’re trying to keep him calm a bit because he is getting out of hand for us,” Messi said in an interview later on in a playful manner. “It’s like that. Some people laugh when I tell them the things he does. Then they spend five minutes with him or get to know him for five minutes, and then they say that is exactly like we said, that we are not lying.”
Messi’s wife, Antonella, and their other son, Thiago, were also part of the experience and they enjoyed it as much as the Barcelona player, but perhaps not as much as his other son.
As you can imagine, the reactions on social media were inevitable and Mateo quickly became a trending topic on Twitter, with a lot of people making funny comments, using Gifs of the event or creating memes of the whole experience.
Lionel Messi is very good when it comes to making headlines with his football prowess on the pitch, but it seems that his son Mateo is upstaging him rather fast. But at least we can tell that Messi is a fan of a healthy competition.
