Huawei Mate Xs hands-on | a second, quite similar, attempt at a folding phone

We were lucky enough to get early hands-on with the Huawei Mate Xs and here is what we thought.

The Huawei Mate X folding phone is back, and there’s a new version with some minor improvements.
Huawei first unveiled its folding phone back in 2019, and the company is now sporting a new device that it’s calling the Mate Xs with an improved chipset on board as well as some additional extras.

This is more of a slight improvement on the Huawei Mate X rather than a whole new folding phone to compete with the likes of Samsung and Motorola with their bendy devices.

The original Huawei Mate X was released, but it was an exclusive to China. We don’t know if this version of the folding phone will be coming to other markets yet but we hope that’ll be the case later in the year. We also don’t know how much it’ll cost, or when it’ll be out.

So what has changed compared to last year’s device? There’s a new chipset onboard called the Kirin 990 5G that allows it to connect to 5G networks if you have them available. The hinge has also been improved to make it more durable too.

Everything else seems to be the same here on the Mate Xs with an 8-inch 2200 x 2480 display when you unfold the phone and a 6.6-inch 1148 x 2480 screen when the device is folded up. This phone unfurls from the rear rather than opening like a book or a clamshell.

The main camera is also the selfie shooter on this device. It’s a combination of a 40MP wide, 8MP telephoto and a 16MP ultrawide camera as well.

Overall, the improvements here are limited but you weren’t ever able to buy the original phone so Huawei is just looking to gently improve the device ready for a worldwide release. At least, that’s what we hope for and hopefully, we’ll learn more about when it’ll be landing around the world soon.
