OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro Launch Event Highlights

The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are both now official, despite the Covid-19 pandemic that's sweeping the world and disrupting the tech industry.

The event happened on April 14th 2020.

OnePlus 8 review two-minute review

The OnePlus 8 represents a culmination of trends. It brings the brand’s famously low-price, high-spec phones ever closer to, if not quite on par with, the polish of other flagship phones; and in several ways, it also sees OnePlus adopting some of its competitor’s design philosophies.

We’ve seen this before, with the removal of the headphone jack in the OnePlus 7; here, the OnePlus 8 and higher-specced but pricier OnePlus 8 Pro have swapped that phone’s pop-up selfie camera with a punch-hole in the top-left corner. Aside from making the camera notably less cool to operate, this isn’t such a loss, because that switch likely made the new phones more water-resistant given the OnePlus 8 Pro has an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating (but not the OnePlus 8, which only has the usual OnePlus assurance of water resistance).

The new phone brings the base-level handset to a flagship level of polish as well as specs. Last year, the brand’s phones finally split between an affordable ‘standard’ version and a Pro model that was a substantial upgrade in terms of both features and looks; but this year the OnePlus 8 gets physical refinements that weren’t granted to 2019’s more affordable models.

OnePlus 8 Pro two-minute early verdict
he OnePlus 8 Pro is a proper flagship phone. Forget previous generations of handsets from the firm, and its 'flagship killer' underdog mantra. OnePlus is now officially mixing it with the biggest names in mobile.

Whereas handsets such as the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro cut a few corners in order to hit a slightly lower price tag than the competition, the OnePlus 8 Pro isn't pulling any punches – it’s now genuine competition for the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, iPhone 11 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro.

Unfortunately, it also means that the days of OnePlus offering an 'affordable flagship' option are over.
