What is Marvel Studios' What If...?

Join us as we enter the multiverse of unlimited possibilities and get you ready for Marvel Studios' first animated series, What If...?

What If...? starts streaming August 11, with new episodes weekly, on Disney+.

The new series features the signature MCU action, you've come to know and love with a strange new twist.
“What If… ?” features fan-favorites, including Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Thor and more.

After being on our screens for well over a decade, we’ll all by now be familiar with the events that happen within the MCU. We all know that Tony Stark made the first Iron Man suit after nearly being killed by his own weapons, that Steve Rogers was turned into Captain America during World War 2 and that Prince T’Challa is the Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda.

But what if something different had happened, how would the MCU be changed? If you’ve ever wanted to know what could have been, the next Disney Plus show set in the MCU will be for you.

That series is What If, a ten episode anthology that will explore a new question every week. We don’t yet know every scenario that we’ll see play out on screen, but expect there to be some big changes to the status quo with questions like ‘What if Peggy Carter was given the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers?’ set to be answered.

Thankfully we’ll have a few familiar voices to help guide us through these strange alternate realities. Samuel L Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Hayley Atwell, Jeff Goldblum and Michael B Jordan are just a few of the actors set to reprise their MCU roles in the Disney Plus series.

What If is also set to be the last appearance of the late, great Chadwick Boseman as Prince T’Challa, as he recorded his lines for the show before passing away last year. In one of the stories we’ll see his character be abducted by Yondu instead of Peter Quill, turning T’Challa into Star-Lord.

Don’t worry if this sounds like it’ll all be too confusing either, none of these stories are likely to impact the MCU we know and love. That's because these adventures will be told in alternate realities to what we’ve seen play out onscreen already, featuring variants of our favorite heroes rather than the real deals. Just strap in for what we’re sure will be an incredibly wild ride and try not to take anything too seriously.

Normally we’d give you a rundown of every film you might want to watch first, but there might not be time for that with What If. That’s because Marvel has promised the questions answered by the show will cover events from pretty much the whole MCU so far.

If you want to try and watch all 24 movies (and three TV shows) before the first episode of What If premieres on August 11 you can certainly try, though we’d instead recommend you focus on the most recent releases WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and Black Widow to avoid any potential spoilers.

Just in case you’re in a rush to watch everything else though, we’ll let you get going. Before you do please remember to like this video, share it with your friends and let us know in the comments what questions you want to see answered in What if?
