Whoever saw Dave Wottle on the track in 1972 recognized him instantly – not just because of his running style, but because of the golf cap he always wore. But behind that distinctive headwear was an extraordinary athlete. In 1970, Dave Wottle emerged as a major running talent when he unexpectedly finished second in the NCAA mile. 1971 was supposed to be his breakthrough year but an injury set him back. In 1972, he made a remarkable comeback: NCAA victories, an AAU title, equaling the world record and then the 800-meter race at the Olympic Games in Munich. With just 200 meters to go, he was in last place. What happened next ranks among the greatest moments in running history: with an unbelievable finishing sprint, he took the gold – winning by just 0.03 seconds.
